i found out last saturday night (9-26-09) that a typhoon hit Manila, i took it calmly at first because it's not unusual since hundreds of typhoon would come and go but the recent one is something i can call as "ondoy's wrath"... flood, it's not new to me but the level of water that elevated within couple of hours is a living history.
i called my aunt and after three rings she answered, it's a good sign and i'm at peace when she said they are fine. her three-level house did a job!. i remember back in college, my friends and i would slowly cross Taft ave from school with knee-level flood. ignore flood! but the open manholes are what were afraid of. flood is something expected annually in Manila's way of life. i was stunned with what i saw in youtube, video clips from friends in facebook, pictures posted, direct experiences of friends. these kind of typhoon disaster has never happened in Manila before, not as tragic as this. my heart melts for my fellow Filipinos who lost their houses, lost lives and had lost a hard earned belongings.
i'm glad that my very good friend posted a link for those Filipinos living abroad and fortunately there is drop-off location for donations near my place. it's not just enough to feel bad nor feel sorry for the victims, what i feel is what i must do and that is to act on this... in my own way for my fellow Filipinos.
